Biographies of our experts.

Frederick M. Ketchen - Host of the Find the Money Podcast

Mr. Ketchen was born, educated, and continues to reside in Mississauga, Ontario. He joined McLeod Young Weir & Company Limited in September 1957 after spending a year at the Toronto Bureau of the Wall Street Journal/Dow Jones. In 1968 he was elected a Director of MYW and was appointed Vice President in 1975. Following the purchase in 1988 by the Bank of Nova Scotia, which renamed the firm ScotiaMcleod Inc., Mr. Ketchen was appointed Senior Vice President & Director of Equity Trading and subsequently Managing Director, Equity Trading.

In 1989 he was elected a governor of the Toronto Stock Exchange and served two years as Vice Chairman before being elected Chairman of the TSE in May 1993 for a two-year term. He has been a member of the TSE’s Systems Committee, was the first Chairman of the Exchange’s Selection Committee, and was appointed Chairman of a 1989 Rule Review Committee on the Operation of the Auction Market and Computer-Based Market Access Systems in Ontario. In 1996 he was asked to be a member of the TSE Special Committee to study the challenges of Market Fragmentation.

Ray Baldelli

Ray Baldelli is Vice President of Retail Loans in Scotiabank’s Domestic Personal Lending and Insurance business. In this role, Ray is responsible for consumer and small business loans product development, including the comprehensive Scotia Total Equity® Plan product. He has over thirteen years experience in financial services, holding various positions within PricewaterhouseCoopers and Scotiabank. Since joining the Bank in 1999, Ray has taken on a number of diverse roles of increasing responsibility across the Scotiabank Group.

Ray is a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario.

Aron Gampel

Aron Gampel is Vice-President & Deputy Chief Economist with Scotia Economics, which provides economic research to the worldwide operations of the Scotiabank Group of Companies.

Mr. Gampel is a senior advisor to Scotiabank’s executive management and provides regular briefings to the organization’s diverse client base. He has broad responsibility for co-managing the day-to-day operations of Scotia Economics, including co-ordinating research into capital and currency market trends, macro-economic developments, industry performance and public policy analysis. He is an important contributor to many of the research unit’s publications that take the pulse of the global economy.

Mr. Gampel also is an ad hoc advisor to a number of industry groups. He is a regular contributor to the Metal Finishings Suppliers’ Association in both Canada and the United States, and is a Director of the Canadian German Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

Prior to joining Scotiabank in 1984, Aron spent six years with the investment firm of Pitfield Mackay Ross Ltd., and four years on the research staff of the Ontario Economic Council analyzing federal and provincial government programme initiatives. He is a graduate of York University in Toronto, and Brock University in St. Catharines.

Warren Jestin

Warren Jestin joined Scotiabank some 25 years ago. Since then, he has become a popular public speaker and media commentator on economic issues in Canada and abroad. The reasons: his expertise both about Canadian and global economic issues is extensive and his team's research work is leading-edge.

Jestin travels extensively meeting with experts around the globe to keep pace with the latest developments. In addition to an M.A. and a Ph.D., Jestin acquired economics experience at the Bank of Canada and he has taught at several universities.

Howard Kabot

Howard Kabot is National Director of Financial Planning at Scotiabank. He has been working with the Bank for eight years and has been in the financial services industry for almost 20 years.

Howard holds a degree in Public Policy and Administration from York University and is also a certified Financial Planner.

John Kellett

John Kellett has 37 years in the investment business and was named “Fund Manager of the Year” by Investment Executive magazine in 2003.

Despite thoroughly enjoying two years of retirement, Mr. Kellett could not resist the call to join Scotia Cassels with two highly respected former colleagues and contribute to the building of the Bank’s mutual fund business. His experience and track-record of managing money has gained him significant credibility amongst his peers throughout the investment industry. Mr. Kellett has been on several industry, corporate and volunteer boards and has been a frequent contributor to Canadian and American media on financial matters.

Kyle McNamara

Kyle is the Head of Small Business with Scotiabank. He has 17 years of experience at a number of different financial institutions and has been with Scotiabank for 7 years. Kyle has led Scotiabank’s significant investment in the Small Business market. His team has introduced a number of tools, resources and information to help Small Business owners’ bottom line.

Kyle graduated from the University of Western Ontario with Honours Degrees in Actuarial Science and Economics.

Bev Moir

Bev is an accomplished investment management consultant and financial planner who empowers families, business owners, individuals and foundations to achieve peace of mind by directing them towards overall financial fitness.

Prior to joining the industry, Bev worked for two decades in health care. This work experience developed her core values of trustworthiness, accountability, and commitment to superior client service. Bev maintains links with health care as a member of Women’s College Hospital Foundation’s Finance and Investment Committee and she is a former Director of the Boards of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Women’s College Hospital.

Bev is committed to on-going professional development to provide her clients with leading edge service and advice. As a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI) and a Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA), offered by the prestigious Wharton School of Finance, she acts with integrity and ethical judgment on behalf of her clients.

Bev has a weekly column, “Financial Fitness with Bev Moir” published in 24Hours, she appears regularly in Canoe Money, and on CP24. Bev is a media spokesperson for Scotiabank on financial planning topics relevant to Canadians’ overall wealth management.

Gillian Riley

Gillian Riley is Managing Director of Retail Deposits at Scotiabank. In this role, Gillian manages the Bank’s deposit business for retail and small business customers which includes all retail chequing/savings accounts and GIC investments both registered and non-registered. She has over 17 years experience in the financial services industry in a variety of areas, including retail branch banking, small business/commercial lending and electronic banking.

Gillian holds a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Hartford Business School and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science from the University of Western Ontario.

Gillian is actively involved in the community, serving on the board of Women's College Hospital and Aboutface International. She manages a girls’ soccer team and raises funds for the local public school.

Phil Soper

As President & Chief Executive of Brookfield Real Estate Services, Phil Soper oversees the Royal LePage, La Capitale and Johnston & Daniel brands.

Phil Soper was named President of what is now named Brookfield Real Estate Services in 2002 and Chief Executive Officer in 2004. In August 2003, he directed the restructuring of Royal LePage into a public company traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange, with the successful launch of the Brookfield Real Estate Services Fund (TXS: BRE.UN), formally known as the Royal LePage Franchise Services Fund (TSX: RSF.UN). In 2007, Phil led the acquisition of La Capitale, a Quebec-based real estate company with close to 1,500 agents.

Prior to joining Royal LePage in 2000 as General Manager, Corporate Relocation Services, Phil Soper was General Manager of IBM Canada’s Information Technology consulting and services business. Phil held various Canadian and global leadership roles at IBM, in professional services, business development, finance and planning, and sales and marketing.

Phil graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce and from the University of Western Ontario’s Ivey Executive Program.

Adrienne Warren

Adrienne Warren has been with Scotiabank since 1993. Her well-read "NAFTA Quarterly" focuses on the consumer, business and labour market trends shaping the North American economy. She is also the editor of the widely-circulated "Market Trends", a weekly roundup of developments from around the world.

David Wilton

In his 30 years at Scotiabank, David Wilton has held a variety of managerial postings in South Western and Northern Ontario, most recently as a Community Manager in Sault Ste. Marie. His Small Business experience includes posts as a Commercial Credit Administrator and Manager of a Business Banking Centre. David is a Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers and holds an MBA from Dalhousie University. David is also co-author of the Succession Planning Toolkit for Small Business.
