Guaranteed investment certificates, or GICs as they are more commonly known, offer something for every investor. For many, the opportunity to receive a guaranteed income stream for a particular period of time makes owning GICs desirable. For others, the ability to tap into markets around the world, is equally appealing...
Timely, guaranteed savings
By including GICs in a diversified portfolio, you’re able to manage your risk to a level that is comfortable for you. GICs are an excellent choice for the fixed income component of your portfolio.
An active life involves saving for milestones along the way, like a car, university, or even a home. GICs are a simple way to help you meet these common saving goals.
Simple and flexible to suit your needs
Adding GICs to your savings or investment plan is simple - your minimum investment, interest rate and maturity date are all known up front:
- You pick the term. You can choose GIC terms as short as 30 days, or as long as five years or more, depending on your needs.
- Start with what fits your budget. Some GICs require as little as $500 to get you started on your way to meeting your savings or investment goals.
- Non-registered savings or long term investment. GICs can be a fundamental part of both your non-registered and registered investment portfolio.
- Access to your money or lock it in. You'll find more liquid short-term GICs that allow you to withdraw money prior to maturity (like cashable GICs) as well as those that guarantee you a higher return in exchange for a commitment for a longer term.
- Income the way you choose. You can buy a GIC that provides an income stream monthly or annually, or one with income compounded until maturity.
- Guaranteed return vs. index-linked. Another GIC option is to buy a GIC with a percentage of return guaranteed and another percentage that is index-linked for potential market growth.
- Staggered maturity for more choice. You can choose to buy GICs with staggered maturity dates over a number of years, allowing you to determine the best way to invest your money at the time each matures and protecting against reinvestment risk by hedging against dramatic swings in interest rate.
