Donations & Sponsorships

Scotiabank supports environmental initiatives by not-for-profit organizations. For example, in 2008:

  • We began a five-year $100,000 gift to the Tides Canada Foundation to help preserve British Columbia's Great Bear Rainforest, a 6.4 million hectare area, which is home to 25 per cent of the earth's remaining ancient coastal temperate forest and diverse wildlife, including the rare white Spirit Bear. Our donation supports an innovative, sustainability model in the region and will contribute to a conservation endowment fund to support science and stewardship jobs in First Nations communities.
  • We entered our second year of a five-year platinum-level sponsorship of the Pembina Institute and GreenLearning.ca, an online learning and research centre designed for teachers and students in grades 1 through 12. During the 2007/2008 school year, more than 1,588 teachers registered for the program and thousands of environmental e-cards were designed and exchanged by students.
  • "We're pleased to support this innovative initiative that protects not only important biodiversity areas, but the livelihoods and communities where many of our employees and customers live and work."

David Poole, Senior Vice-President, B.C. & Yukon Region, speaks about Scotiabank's $100,000 pledge to help the Tides Canada Foundation protect the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia.
  • Close to 100 Scotiabank Guyana employees took the time to plant 514 trees to help beautify several sites and diminish climate change while Scotiabankers in Jamaica joined International Clean Up Day to restore Montego Bay Marine Park Beach and St. Catherine Hellshire Beach.
  • In El Salvador, Scotiabank made a donation to SalvaNATURA, a national ecological foundation, to publish a special supplement in newspapers to encourage readers to protect the environment. The Bank also pledged funds to the Zoological Foundation of El Salvador (FUNZEL) to aid wild animals that are in danger of extinction.
  • Through the Scotiabank Bright Future Program to support children's charities in the Caribbean and Latin America, we sponsor projects that teach children about sustainable development. For example, since 2005, Scotiabank Peru has sponsored The Association for Children and their Environment (ANIA) and their childrens' land garden projects.
  • To help small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Jamaica reduce their energy use and expenses, Scotiabank sponsored two energy-efficiency workshops for SMEs, developed by the Inter-American Investment Corporation. More than 100 attendees took part in the free events, held in Kingston and Montego Bay.
