1996 - Vietnam - Scotiabank adds to its presence in Asia with the opening of a Representative Office in Hanoi. 

In 2016 Scotiabank refocuses its operations in the region and closes this office.

1996 - First dual currency ABM - Scotiabank introduces its first dual currency ABM in St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles.

The machine dispenses guilders and American dollars.

1996 - Online Banking - Scotiabank begins testing the first Internet banking service in Canada.

Customers can now access a range of personal financial services from their home computers.

1996 - Scotia 2020 Premiere - Scotiabank introduces Canada's first portable wireless debit and credit card terminal, Scotia 2020 Premiere. 

Operating by radio frequency these terminals allow businesses to bring the terminal to the customer. They can also calculate the tip!

1996 - The Inner Circle - Scotiabank begins publication of The Inner Circle, an internal newsletter distributed by the Aboriginal Banking division. 

It includes stories from across the business and information on best practices.

1996 - Website

On January 02 Scotiabank launches its official Internet site at www.scotiabank.ca.

1997 - National Trust - Scotiabank expands its Canadian operations through the acquisition of National Trustco Inc., including its main operating subsidiary, National Trust Company.

Founded in Toronto in 1898, National Trust has a particularly strong presence in southern Ontario.

1997 - Peru - Scotiabank enters Peru in 1997 with the opening of a Representative Office in Lima.

Scotiabank also acquires a minority stake in Banco Sudamericano, the countryā€™s 10th largest bank.

1997 - El Salvador - In October Scotiabank enters El Salvador with the acquisition of a majority share in Banco Ahorromet, the countryā€™s 7th largest bank.

Scotiabank sells its operations in El Salvador in 2020.

1998 - Scotia 2020 Mobile - Scotiabank introduces a point of sale terminal which operates via wireless data network. Credit and debit card transactions can now be processed anywhere. 

Scotiabank pilots the system in partnership with Pizza Pizza.

1999 - Bangladesh - Scotiabank enters Bangladesh with the opening of a branch in Dhaka on May 30.

Scotiabank closes the branch in 2001 and no longer operates in the country.

1999 - Sri Lanka - Scotiabank enters Sri Lanka with the opening of a branch in Colombo on August 9. 

Scotiabank closes the branch in 2001.
