The Scotiabank Lawyer Banking Program offers tailored advice and banking solutions designed to meet your unique needs as a law or articling student in mind. In addition to the Scotia Professional® Student Plan Line of Credit, you can receive savings and rewards on personal banking solutions to help you manage your finances.
Law school can be expensive, and managing your finances can be stressful. You deserve specialized advice and answers to your questions to help you navigate this important chapter in your career. Graduating to the next stage of your career introduces new financial considerations. As an articling student, finding the right balance between managing your debt, saving for your first home, or planning to possibly start your first practice can be complex.
At Scotiabank, we offer tailored financial advice, online tools, and resources built with the needs of professionals like you in mind.
Speak to a Scotiabank Professional Advisor.
There are a variety of funding sources available to you. You should try to explore the sources you don’t need to repay — scholarships, bursaries and government grants. Eligibility and application deadlines vary depending on the university and province, so start your research early. Unfortunately for most students, these sources won’t cover the entire cost of law school, and you may need to borrow through a government loan or student line of credit.
Applying for a student loan and committing to such a large debt load can be nerve wracking! A Scotiabank Professional Advisor can provide advice to law students on the benefits of the Scotia Professional® Student Plan line of credit, including the cost of borrowing, how interest is accrued, when you can withdraw the funds, and more information on your repayment options.
Accumulating debt with little or no opportunity to earn income in these years can seem overwhelming. Paying attention to your finances and scheduling regular check-ins with your Scotiabank Professional Advisor to discuss your financial goals will go a long way to help you finish law school with a level of debt you are comfortable with and that you can start to repay when you begin to earn an income.
Articling is often the first chance for law students to start thinking about paying down debt. As an articling law student, you may have a combination of government student loans and a student line of credit. For government student loans, you typically have at least six months following law school before you need to start repaying (check with your provincial/territorial student aid office to confirm when you have to start paying back your loan). The terms of your student line of credit will depend on your financial institution.
The Scotia Professional® Student Plan line of credit requires no payments until you have graduated or completed your articling program, plus offers another two years repayment grace period2. The grace period can be beneficial when you are new to practice as it provides the flexibility to use the line of credit to help cover expenses as you start your career.
When you begin articling and start earning income, you may consider paying down your debt. Depending on where you live, what your future plans and career goals are, it could be possible to start paying down your debt or investing, or both. Your feelings about debt should be taken into account: if being in debt makes you uncomfortable, there’s nothing wrong with considering paying down a portion of it first.
Once you understand the nature of your debt and your feelings about it, as well as the benefits of paying down debt versus investing, you’ll be more confident when you make decisions about your financial plan. Speak to a Scotiabank Professional Advisor to discuss financial planning and your goals.
The Scotiabank Lawyer Banking Program offers tailored advice and banking solutions designed to meet your unique needs as a lawyer. In addition to preferred benefits, this includes banking solutions created with law professionals like you in mind.
Whether you’ve made partner, you’re on track to start, expand or transition your practice, incorporating your business, investing, or planning for your retirement, Scotiabank is committed to providing you with financial advice and tailored banking solutions to meet your personal and practice needs.

Choosing to rent or buy is a very personal decision depending on your short and long-term plans as well as your cash flow and level of comfort in managing your debt.
Many law professionals early in their career choose to rent initially. One advantage to renting is, it could give you the flexibility to change your location and time to decide where you will settle down.
There are some upfront costs of home ownership — as well as the ups and downs of house prices in the short term — that means it may be unwise to buy unless you plan on keeping the home for several years at minimum or you want to use it as an investment.
If you are considering buying a home, there are a lot of factors to consider when choosing a mortgage. In addition to how much can you afford, there is the question of fixed vs variable rates, an open vs a closed term, the payment options, and much more. A Scotiabank Professional Banking Specialist and Home Financing Advisor will take the time to understand your goals, what is important to you, explain the different features of a mortgage, and find a customized solution to suit your specific needs. Contact a Professional Baking Specialist to find out what features and benefits are available to you.
The Scotiabank Lawyer Banking Program offers tailored advice and banking solutions designed to meet your unique needs as a lawyer. In addition to preferred benefits, this includes banking solutions created with law professionals like you in mind.
Scotiabank's Professional Banking Specialists understand the unique financial needs of starting, managing and expanding your law practice. We have decades of business banking experience to provide you with tailored advice and solutions to help you manage your finances.
Based on your specific needs, there are a variety of business banking solutions to consider. You might only require an operating account and business credit card to allow you to separate your business expenses from personal ones. Or you may have more complex needs that include financing building purchases, leaseholds; cash management, merchant and payroll services; and a business line of credit to assist in managing cashflows.
Scotiabank Professional Banking Specialists understand the unique financial needs of starting and managing a practice and can provide expertise and tailored solutions to manage your business finances.
You probably received very little training on being a business owner during your law studies. The complexity can sometimes make the practice of law feel like a job as opposed to a calling. Having the right financial advice, expertise, services and tools to manage your business is crucial.
Whether you are starting your own practice, buying into one, expanding or relocating your practice, your financial needs are complex.
A Scotiabank Professional Banking Specialist can help you better understand the business financing solutions available to you and provide customized options that best meet your unique needs.
Before making a decision to buy or lease, there are a number of factors that a lawyer may want to first consider. A big part of your decision will depend on your marketplace — what commercial space is currently available in the neighbourhood where you want to establish your practice and is it for lease or sale? With leasing there is less upfront investment as you build your practice in the early years; however, there is the potential of your landlord selling the property, resulting in having to relocate your practice. In addition to unforeseen set-up and relocation expenses, it can be costly if your practice needs to relocate in a different part of the city as clients may not move with you, resulting in having to rebuild your client roster.
Owning your own commercial property could help mitigate business risks like these down the road. It can also turn into a valuable investment and a significant asset upon entering retirement: Depending on your comfort level and other financial circumstances, you could consider becoming a landlord leasing to another law professional, decide to sell the asset, which may have appreciated in value, or pass it on to children or other family members.
A Scotiabank Professional Banking Specialist can help you evaluate your options and provide advice to help you make the best decision for you, your clients and your practice.
We can help advise on affordability and equity building to own your practice.
Our program provides advice and banking solutions for retired lawyers to enable you to enjoy your retirement. Let our team focus on your financial well-being so you can spend your valuable time on what matters most – your loved ones and yourself.
Retirement is highly personal — for some lawyers, a nest egg of $2 million may not be enough, while for others, $1 -$1.5 million may be more than enough. One of the hardest things about planning for retirement is articulating your retirement goals — it takes time and active reflection.
The earlier you start thinking and talking about it, the more time you have to explore what retirement means to you, and how to create the retirement you want. Speak to a Scotiabank Advisor to discuss your retirement plan.
Owning a law practice can add complexities to your estate plan. Your executor must have the time — as well as the specialized knowledge of business, tax and estate laws — to manage your estate and the business you’re leaving behind.
Your Scotiabank Advisor can refer you to our team of Wealth specialists including Business and Family Advisory, Total Wealth Planners, Investment Advisors and Trust professionals to discuss Wealth and Estate planning strategies to help protect your family's assets.

Purchases at merchants where these categories are not their primary business do not qualify. Some merchants may (i) provide other goods or services; or (ii) have separate merchants located on their premises that may not be classified with an MCC under the Accelerated Earn Rate categories and such purchases will not earn the Accelerated Earn Rate as applicable. The Accelerated Earn Rates for the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card applies to the first $50,000 in purchases charged to the Scotiabank Gold American Express Account annually at merchants qualifying for the Accelerated Earn Rate, calculated annually from January 1st to December 31st each year. Once you exceed the applicable annual spend threshold, you will continue earning points at the Regular Earn Rate of one (1) Scene+ Point per $1.00 in purchases charged and posted to the Scotiabank Gold American Express Account. Eligibility: Only purchases earn Scene+ Points. Cash advances (including Balance Transfers and Cash-Like Transactions), fees, interest or other charges, returns, refunds or other similar credits to your Account do not qualify for Scene+ Points. Scene+ Points will not be posted to an Account that is not in good standing when purchases are made or when a statement is issued, or if the Account is not open when a statement is issued. See your Scene+ Points terms at www.scotiabank.com/sceneplus for full program details. All dollar amounts are in Canadian currency unless otherwise stated. |

† Click here for a list of eligible direct deposits, pre-authorized transactions. Notwithstanding a transaction may be included in these lists, certain exclusions may still apply and Scotiabank reserves the right to modify these lists and to determine whether a specific direct deposit, pre-authorized transaction is eligible for the offer. Subject to these terms, the monthly account fee will be waived and will not appear as a charge on your Ultimate Package Account for each month following the month the above conditions are met and provided the Ultimate Package Account is open and in “good standing” at the time of the waiver. For example, if you clear an eligible direct deposit or pre-authorized transaction in the month of July, your monthly account fee will be waived in the month of August and will not appear as a charge on your Ultimate Package Account. However, if you do not clear an eligible direct deposit or pre-authorized transaction in the month of August, you will be charged the monthly account fee in September. The Ultimate Package Account is not in “good standing” if any of the following conditions are not met: (i) it has a negative balance exceeding the authorized overdraft limit, (ii) it has been in continuous overdraft for a period of three (3) consecutive months, or (iii) the account holder is in breach of the Ultimate Package Account agreement with Scotiabank. For existing eligible clients with a different Scotiabank chequing account who switch to the Ultimate Package Account, the fee waiver will begin in the month following the month in which the client’s account was switched to the Ultimate Package Account, provided all offer conditions have been met. This means if a client switches accounts they could be charged the monthly Ultimate Package Account fee in the first month. Continued eligibility for this offer is subject to annual verification of client’s legal license status upon request by Scotiabank and compliance with these offer terms. Failure to provide the required validation will invalidate this offer. If the client ceases to be a member in good standing of a provincial or territorial law society authorized to practice law they will no longer be eligible for this offer and the Ultimate Package Account will begin to be charged the then current monthly account fee. All other applicable service charges on the Ultimate Package Account will continue to be applied. Maximum one offer per client regardless of the number of Ultimate Package Accounts opened and the fee waiver will be applied to the first Ultimate Package Account opened. This offer is only available through a Scotiabank Advisor in branch or Scotiabank Professional Banking Specialist. This offer is non-transferable and may be changed, suspended, cancelled, or extended at any time without notice. |

24 | The Investment Season Welcome Offer T&Cs The Scotiabank Registered Account Welcome Offer (the “Offer”) is available between November 1, 2024 and March 1, 2025 (the “Offer Period”) to individuals who open one or more new Eligible Registered Account(s) (defined below) with either The Bank of Nova Scotia or Scotia Securities Inc. and complete certain qualifying transactions. For the purposes of this Offer, the following Scotia Registered Accounts are “Eligible Registered Account(s)”: Scotia Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs, excluding locked-in plans such as LIRAs and LRSPs) (each an “Eligible RRSP”), Scotia Tax-Free Savings Accounts (each an “Eligible TFSA”) and Scotia First Home Savings Accounts (each an “Eligible FHSA”). Scotia RRIFs (including locked-in income plans), RESPs, RDSPs, and non-registered Scotia Investment Accounts are not eligible for the Offer. In order to qualify for a Cash Bonus (defined below), the individual cannot currently or in the preceding 6 months have held the same Eligible Registered Account type with either The Bank of Nova Scotia or Scotia Securities Inc. (together, “Scotiabank”). To qualify for a cash bonus (the “Cash Bonus”): 1) Open one or more new Eligible Registered Account(s) during the Offer Period; 2) By March 1, 2025, contribute or transfer-in a Minimum Qualifying Investment Amount (as defined below) into your new Eligible Registered Account(s) and maintain that Minimum Qualifying Investment Amount until May 31, 2025 to qualify for either of the following Cash Bonuses:
3) By March 1, 2025, set up and clear one recurring pre-authorized contribution (PAC) from any Scotiabank personal bank account with a minimum value of at least $100 per month in any of your new Eligible Registered Accounts, which must have recurred for a minimum of three (3) consecutive months by May 31, 2025. General Terms: Customers are responsible to confirm their contribution limits noted on their most current Notice of Assessment issued by the Canada Revenue Agency prior to making any contribution to their Eligible Registered Account(s). Scotiabank is not responsible for any contribution over a customer’s limit in connection with this Offer. The Cash Bonus is not considered a contribution and therefore will not impact contribution limits. For clients investing in non-Canadian dollar currencies, the investment will be calculated based on Canadian dollar equivalent at the Scotiabank rate on the transaction date to determine eligibility for the Offer. The Cash Bonus will be paid in Canadian dollars. The applicable Cash Bonus will be paid into your new Eligible Registered Account on or around September 30, 2025 provided all Offer conditions have been satisfied. Your Eligible Registered Account(s) must be open and in good standing at the time of the Cash Bonus payout. For purposes of this Offer, an Eligible Registered Account is not in 'good standing' if the account holder is in breach of the Eligible Registered Account’s client account agreements. If multiple Eligible Registered Accounts are opened, you will receive your applicable Cash Bonus into your Eligible Registered Accounts on a pro rata basis as a percentage of the total Qualifying Investment Amount. For example, if you invest $6,000 into an Eligible TFSA and $8,000 into an Eligible FHSA, you will qualify for a Cash Bonus of CAD$350, which will be paid as follows: CAD$150 in the Eligible TFSA and CAD$200 in the Eligible FHSA. If multiple Eligible Registered Accounts of the same type are opened, the Cash Bonus (or the pro rata portion of the Cash Bonus, if applicable) will be paid to the first Eligible Registered Account opened that has met the Offer conditions. For a spousal RRSP, the Cash Bonus will be paid into that plan and not paid to the contributor. This Offer is non-transferable, non-saleable, may not be exchanged for cash and may not be duplicated. Limit of one (1) Cash Bonus per customer, regardless of the number of Eligible Registered Accounts opened. Offer may be changed, cancelled or extended at any time and cannot be combined with any other offers except as otherwise specified. |
