If you ever waiver in your confidence, Nasreen Somani is the right person to deliver an empowering pep talk.
“I have a ‘Nothing is impossible’ mindset, and I believe that anything can be done if you put your mind to it,” says Nasreen, who has reached a career pinnacle as Treasurer at Great Gulf Group, the diversified, North American real estate development and construction company.
Nasreen’s advice is as solid as the foundations of Great Gulf’s quality homes, office space and retail centres, and based on her history of relentless effort, supported by her family and other allies who helped frame her ambitions.
Give your best effort and keep evolving:
Looking back on her early years as a young professional with a keen interest in finance, Nasreen recalls that, “I immersed myself in learning various facets of the industry. I made a series of strategic moves, across different roles, and organizations, each chosen to broaden my skill set and deepen my understanding of the financial landscape.”
She adds that her appointment as Treasurer at Great Gulf was no time to rest, but rather a chance to keep evolving: “I’ve always been guided by the principles of continuous learning, adaption and looking ahead. Lifelong learning enables me to navigate complex challenges and seize opportunities with confidence.”
Noting that her drive for continuous, personal and professional growth helped nudge her forward to target ever-higher goals, Nasreen states that her own courage and self-belief actually originated with her father.
Nasreen reflects, “My father’s ambition for me instilled a profound inner strength. As he advanced to become CEO of a major company in Pakistan, he made sure his three daughters received the finest education and upbringing. His enduring advice was, ‘Trust in your abilities. Approach challenges with confidence and make us proud.’ Today, with the unwavering support of my entire family, I’m inspired to make a meaningful impact through my work.”
Seek continuous learning opportunities:
Nasreen admits that everyone needs regular encouragement to sustain their inner drive: “Continuous learning is what keeps me going, and fuels my enthusiasm and invigoration. When I find an environment that supports that type of learning, such as Great Gulf, I thrive, and I try to bring the same to my team.”
In fact, she credits Scotiabank Women Initiative for creating that ecosystem to support women in business: “It empowers women entrepreneurs through comprehensive support, resources and opportunities, by providing invaluable guidance and mentorship, as well as a community where ambitious women can connect with industry leaders and peers. This network and support system are crucial for breaking down barriers and driving success.”
Nasreen adds that this type of support mirrors the service and advice that Scotiabank has provided to Great Gulf over the years: “As a business that is continuously growing and navigating different markets, we must think outside the box and access specialized support. The Scotiabank team is proactive, ready to step up, and engage in honest conversations that provide me with the confidence needed to make informed decisions.”
Such a support network suggests that the future is bright for both Nasreen and her organization. She observes that, “The future for Great Gulf includes expanding our portfolio and transformative developments that enhance urban living and promote environmental stewardship. For me, that means leading these initiatives with a forward-thinking approach and fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence.”
To achieve this type of growth, Nasreen advises women to, “Continuously invest in your skills. By staying informed and adaptable, you will gain a competitive edge, so don’t hesitate to seek out new knowledge, through formal education, industry events, or networking with other professionals. ”This ongoing learning will help you support the organization you work for and find the confidence to believe in yourself and your vision.”
