Scotiabank Timeline

1978 - Simplified Language - Working closely with law firms, consultants and government, Scotiabank becomes the first Canadian bank to introduce simplified consumer loan forms.

The forms are in non-technical, everyday language and they are also redesigned and reorganized to be more meaningful and easily understandable to customers.

1979 - Scotiabank. Just around the corner. Right around the world. – Scotiabank launches a new advertising campaign that emphasizes both its local strength and international scope.

By 1979 Scotiabank has grown its network to almost 1000 branches across Canada plus offices in 46 different countries.

1979 - Scotia Business Plan - Scotiabank introduces a unique program of services to finance or lease machinery and equipment to businesses, farmers and professionals. Two packages are designed, one for vendors and one for end-users.

As part of the new program, a client’s cash flow is factored in when determining approvals.

1979 - Daily Interest Savings Account - Scotiabank introduces a new type of savings account which calculates interest on the daily closing balance. Interest is paid semi-annually.

The Bank introduces its first daily interest chequing account in 1982.

1980 - International Results

For the first time in Scotiabank's history, the international operations of the Bank provide more than half of total yearly earnings.

1980 - Thailand 

Scotiabank enters Thailand with the opening of a Representative Office in Bangkok.

1981 - Any Branch Banking – Scotiabank launches the CASHSTOP service (TRANS-ACTION in Quebec). It gives Scotiabank customers the option of doing their everyday banking at almost any Scotiabank branch in Canada.

It is made possible by a network of approximately 4700 online terminals in branches across the country.

1982 - Advocating Optimism - In August Scotiabank releases a series of ads based on themes from popular children's stories.

They each address Canada's economic situation and form a strong appeal for common sense and optimism in the midst of difficult times.

1982 - China

On May 13 Scotiabank enters mainland China with the opening of a Representative Office in Beijing.

1982 - GETTING THERE - Scotiabank launches a new savings program for young customers.

GETTING THERE is a continuation of the Hockey College Program but with a broadened scope which embraces all activities and topics of interest to Canadian kids.

1982 - St. Kitts & Nevis - Scotiabank enters St. Kitts on November 1 with the opening of a branch in Basseterre.

In 2019, as part of a strategic refocusing, Scotiabank completes the sale of its operations in St. Kitts.

1982 - Turks and Caicos

Scotiabank enters Turks and Caicos on November 15 with the opening of a branch at Grand Turk.
