How to switch to Scotiabank

We’ll guide you through how to switch banks, step by step. Follow the checklist below, discover features you’ll love, and learn how to minimize bank fees.

Your switching banks checklist

It’s not complicated when you follow these steps.

STEP 1 of 4

Open your new bank account

To open a bank account, you’ll need to have your government-issued photo I.D., like a driver’s license or a passport, or two documents verifying your identity, like your birth certificate and a utility bill. Check out our full list of acceptable pieces of identification and other tips for opening a bank account.

Online: Browse our chequing and savings accounts or answer some quick questions for a personalized recommendation. Once you find an account you like, you can apply online in under 10 minutes.

By phone: Our contact centre can help you choose an account that’s right for you. Call 1.800.4SCOTIA.

In person: Visit a branch near you.

STEP 2 of 4

Transfer your money

Choose how you’d like to move your balance from your old bank account to your new Scotia account. The best choice for you depends on factors like how fast you’ll need access to the money in your new account, how much you’re willing to pay in fees, and if you’d rather visit a branch or move your money online.

STEP 3 of 4

Update your automatic transactions

We can help you switch online: Just log in to your Scotiabank account, select “Pay bills,” and then choose “Switch my bills to Scotia.” Review the payee list from your old account to make sure you don’t miss anything.

This is a good time to transfer your direct deposits too. We’ll walk you through updating direct deposits for your payroll or government payments.

Other ways to switch: You can also switch your bills at any branch or over the phone by calling 1-800-4-SCOTIA.

STEP 4 of 4

Say goodbye to your old bank account

When you’re ready, you’ll be able to close your old bank account by phone, in writing, or at a branch, depending on your bank.

Some banks will let you close your account online. When you log in, look for an option like “account details” or “settings.” That’s usually where you’ll find the option to close your account online, if possible.

If you’d like to leave your bank account open, check if you need to maintain a minimum balance. Some banks charge a fee if you’re not regularly using a bank account. It’s a good idea to keep your bank account open for at least 90 days to avoid an early closure fee and ensure all of your automatic payments have been transferred.

No matter how you close your account, make sure to ask for written confirmation once you’re done for extra security.
